Gemini crosses a billion users and closes the gap with ChatGPT

Google’s Gemini AI product reached a billion monthly active users, CEO Sundar Pichai announced on X, noting it is the 14th Google product to achieve that level. The growth places Gemini among the fastest-growing products in the company’s history. The announcement came shortly after Google’s second-quarter 2026 earnings call, where the firm reported 950 million monthly active users and a threefold rise in daily active users over the past year.
The figure puts Gemini at the same point OpenAI reached a month earlier, when ChatGPT crossed the billion-user threshold in June. Google clarified that the disclosed number applies only to the standalone Gemini app and does not include AI users accessing the technology through other Google channels. The model, however, is widely integrated across Search, Workspace and Android. The AI Mode within Search alone serves more than a billion monthly active users worldwide.
Google disclosed how consumers actually use the assistant. 63 percent of users speak directly to Gemini via voice commands. The system also creates more than 150 million images each day. The company continues to release new models and capabilities, the latest being Gemini 3.5 Flash, designed to improve coding work and autonomous AI agent tasks. Platform growth is not limited to Google’s operating system; the firm reports over 100 million active users on iOS.
The achievement arrives ahead of Google’s Made by Google event, where the company is expected to launch new Gemini-based features across its Pixel devices.
